ESXi – Getting past installer hang

If VMWare ESXi 5.5 installer hangs at “Relocating modules and starting up the kernel”, you can use the following to get it to run:

  1. Press shift+O during ESXi boot
  2. Append “ignoreHeadless=TRUE” to the options
  3. When the system reboots after the install, perform steps 1 and 2 again
  4. From the ESXi shell, run the following command (this applies the ignoreHeadless option permanently): esxcfg-advcfg –set-kernel “TRUE” ignoreHeadless

  1. Thank you! Got my installation continued thanks to your post.
    However, it doesnt ask me where to install the esxi. It starts up and i can logon without root password. but there is nothing install., disks empty, I can see the disk i vsphere client if I add storage. Any clues why of what do ? Thank you

  2. I’m not sure if ESXi skips asking for an install location or not if there is only one disk. It’s strange that you can log in without the password though. Maybe it’s seeing a previous install – try wiping your disks before installing.

  3. Hi,
    I completed setup on a headless system via serial console. Installation was successful but after rebooting system is stuck on the relocating message. SHIFT+O seems not to work; how can I add the headless option to parameters?
    Thanks in advance

  4. I am attempting to add this change to my boot.cfg file.

    kernelopt=runweasel ignoreheadless=TRUE ks=usb:myks.cfg

    This doesn’t seem to be working. Has anyone tried this and have you gotten it to work?
